Evacuees from the Stourbridge Fire
Aug 13, 2026
From Stourbridge News .....

Twenty-four people have stayed at a makeshift shelter at a school in Stourbridge after they were affected by a major fire in the town. The help came after "extensive" devastation was caused by the huge blaze. Chief fire officer Simon Tuhill, of West Midlands Fire Service, said the blaze in Stourbridge, which forced some people to flee after it started tearing through homes, was “one of the most significant” incidents the region’s fire service has ever dealt with.

A further 21 residents and 19 staff from a care home were also given shelter at the school. Old Swinford Hospital School threw open its doors to help those displaced by the fire after some homes caught alight and other residents were evacuated as a precaution as a wildfire raged for much of yesterday.

People have been bringing in food donations to help those displaced. Headteacher Paul Kilbride said: "We are just here at Oldswinford school helping out, people have been very generous. We are just facilitating people staying here. Dudley Borough Council are the organisers. I believe there were 24 displaced people who stayed with us last night, and a further 19 staff and 21 individuals who were evacuated by a nearby care home."

One volunteer Pam Bata said: "I used to volunteer at OSH for 10 years in the uniform shop. Both of my boys attended here. I'm very local to the school. But the support has been overwhelming. So I cleared my diary today, and I'm just here."
"And the support from the local community, everyone has bought everything from towels to pillows, bedding, to food. You know, milk, cereal, pastries. The community has really rallied round together. It's been amazing. Volunteers sorting here. People just dropping off, for vulnerable families. We all feel that a little bit better, and hopefully they can all go back to their homes."
